  • The Colorado Legislature Passes Two New Laws that Allow for Rainwater Harvesting

On June 2, 2009, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter signed into law two pieces of legislation that allow Colorado residents to harvest precipitation for domestic use. Senate Bill 80 (SB 80) allows residents who are not hooked up to commercial or municipal water systems to collect rooftop precipitation for defined purposes with a permit from the Colorado Division of Water Services. House Bill 1129 (HB 1129) directs the state to approve ten rainwater collection pilot projects in new housing or mixed-use developments, provided that residents replenish an equal amount of water to the stream.
