  • New York City Enacts Incentive Plan to Increase the Number of Fuel-Efficient Taxicabs

On March 26, 2008, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) released new rules aimed at increasing the number of hybrid and clean diesel taxicabs in the city. The rules permit vehicle owners to charge drivers a higher daily rate for the use of hybrid and clean diesel taxis. The rules also reduce the maximum daily rate owners may charge drivers for the use of traditional, less fuel-efficient vehicles. This is New York’s second attempt to increase the usage of fuel-efficient taxis. In October 2008, a federal District Court judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking the City’s attempt to impose stringent mileage standards on these vehicles.
