  • Governor Schwarzenegger Proclaims Drought in California and State of Emergency In Nine Counties Triggering Agency Mandates

    On June 4, 2008, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed an executive order declaring a drought in California, and followed up a week later with a proclamation of a state of emergency in the Central Valley. Following two straight years of below-average rainfall, very low snowmelt runoff, and court-ordered water withdrawal restrictions, the governor’s declarations direct the Department of Water Resources to act swiftly in coordinating efforts to provide water to those hardest hit in the state—largely the Central Valley agricultural industry.
