While Colorado Eyes an Abundant Snowpack, California Governor Declares Drought
After an unusually wet year, the Colorado snowpack should produce more water during spring runoff than it has for the past 11 years. Quoting national experts in hydrology and drought conditions, the Denver Post reported that this winter has been atypical because all the western mountains enjoyed wet conditions. Elliott, “Thick Layers of Snow Poised to Refresh Parched West,” Denver Post (April 23, 2008). The likely result for Southern California will be water deliveries at or above the highest levels set in an agreement reached in December 2007 between the seven states that obtain water from the Colorado River.
