  • Central Florida’s Water Wars Beginning to ‘Surface’: Inter-Basin Transfer as an Option Begins Political and Legal Debates

In mid-July, the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) acknowledged that it was informally considering a suggested inter-basin transfer from the Withlacoochee River and Lake Rousseau to serve water needs in the fast growing Leesburg, Clermont, and Marion County areas. The magnitude of what is being considered is being downplayed by SJRWMD and the SJRWMD is adamant that this is not a formal proposal. The alarm was sounded when at least 14 communities located within the SJRWMD’s boundaries said they were considering the Withlacoochee River and Lake Rousseau as potential sources of future supply.
