Recent Events Spark Optimism for Water Agencies with Interests in the Mokelumne River
In early June of 2007, the State Water Resources Control Board reversed its decision to cancel the Mokelumne River Water and Power Authority’s 17-year-old application to divert water from the Mokelumne River. The State Board is also holding a hearing on June 21, 2007 to review its earlier decision to rescind most of the North San Joaquin Water Conservation District’s permitted flood year right to divert up to 20,000 acre-feet from the Mokelumne. In addition, after years of negotiation, a coalition of San Joaquin County interests are cautiously optimistic that the East Bay Municipal Utility District will allow part of its currently unexercised Mokelumne rights to be put to beneficial use outside its own service area.
