  • New Mexico’s 2007 Legislative Session Focuses on Water Conservation and Subdivision Protection

The 48th New Mexico Legislative Session convened in mid January for its extended, sixty-day session. A primary focus of the session was on water-related bills, the legislature passing 15 out of 74 total water-related bills, with 12 of those bills getting signed into law. At the end of 2006, Governor Bill Richardson announced that 2007 would be the “Year of Water.” Previous sessions had been focused on other important issues like New Mexico’s children. As part of this year’s initiative, the Governor planned to increase spending on water-related projects, including the adjudication of water rights and the establishment of a Middle Rio Grande Bureau by the State Engineer.
