  • North Carolina Environmental Management Commission Approves Inter- Basin Water Transfer From Catawba River to Municipalities for Urban Uses

On a 14-1 vote, the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission on January 10 approved a controversial inter-basin transfer of water from the Catawba River basin for use by the cities of Concord and Kannapolis. The inter-basin transfer approved by the state commission would allow the two Cabarrus County, North Carolina cities to withdraw up to 10 million gallons of water each day from the Catawba River basin. The action flew in the face of objections by South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster, who had threatened legal action on behalf of downstream users if the commission were to approve the water transfer.
