Mississippi Gulf Coast Water and Wastewater Resources Plan Has a Half- Billion-Dollar Price Tag
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in late November of 2006 published a draft Mississippi Gulf Region Water and Wastewater Plan (MGR Plan) that describes a series of projects planned for the post-Katrina rebuilding of water and wastewater infrastructure in the region. The draft calls for spending roughly $500 million of the $5.05 billion allocated to Mississippi by Congress in Hurricane Katrina relief funds. The MGR Plan describes numerous proposed water projects under consideration for construction across six southern Mississippi counties: Hancock, Harrison, George, Jackson, Pearl River, and Stone.
