EPA Promulgates New Rule Regulating Contamination of Drinking Water Drawn from Groundwater
(National Primary Drinking Water Regulations: Ground Water Rule)
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced (and on October 11 the EPA Administrator signed) the promulgation of a new rule regulating the disinfection of groundwater used as a drinking water source. The rule, originally announced on May 10, 2000 (65 Federal Register 30194), will provide greater oversight for systems relying on groundwater to ensure that disinfection is up to standards and that, as a result, microbial and fecal contaminants are being addressed. The final rule has not yet been published in the federal register but, once it is, it will be effective 60 days from that date.
