Spinach Processing under Scrutiny as E-Coli Outbreak Sickens Nearly 200 People and Kills One
Spinach growers, resource suppliers, and agricultural processing facilities in the Salinas Valley are opening the doors to investigators after an E. coli outbreak spread across 26 states, including California, in late August 2006 resulting in a reported 192 cases, 98 hospitalizations, one death, and 30 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (a syndrome which can lead to kidney failure).
