  • Proposed Federal Legislation Would Ban Dumping of Sewage into the Great Lakes within Twenty Years—H.R. 5734: The ‘Great Lakes Water Protection Act’

Two Chicago-area Congressmen, U.S. Representatives Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Dan Lipinski (D-Chicago), have proposed legislation to ban the dumping of sewage into the Great Lakes. Called the “Great Lakes Water Protection Act,” the legislation would amend the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (known as the Clean Water Act) and phase out the dumping of untreated sewage by 2026. Violators would be subject to civil penalties of $100,000 per day.
