Recent Investigations, Settlements, Penalties and Sanctions
Federal and state agencies have recently entered into million-dollar settlements or have filed complaints with potential multi-million dollar fines. Of particular note is a $60 million settlement with Chief Consolidated Mining Company that contains a confession of judgment in favor of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In resolved matters, Chevron Phillips agreed to pay a $1.8 million civil penalty and perform a supplemental environmental project (SEP) that will cost at least $1.2 million to benefit a non-profit organization and a local fire department. Finally, EPA is meeting the mandate it set out with the Petroleum Refinery Initiative; CITGO is the fifth largest petroleum refiner to settle with the government.
