NEVADA: Enforcement of Water Quality Regulation and Penalties
As with most Western states, Nevada is faced with the constant prospect of an inadequate water supply. Nevada is the nation’s driest state, and has grown at an incredible rate over the last two decades.Nevada’s demand for water is anticipated to increase by an additional 15 percent by the year 2020 (Source: Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources). Nevada must balance the needs of a growing population with its concerns over water quality. Pollution from manufacturing facilities and from urban areas make this a challenge. The state is also home to two of the most well-known lakes in North America: Lake Tahoe in Northern Nevada and Lake Mead in Southern Nevada. Lake Mead is the largest source of the state’s drinking water, and Lake Tahoe is a unique wilderness as well as a prime vacation spot. Each of these lakes presents its own separate issues.
